Dangers of a Tanning Salon

Everyone wants to have a healthy summer glow. But should you be willing to gamble your health to get tan skin? There are a number of health dangers associated with tanning salons, and those that frequently use salons should be aware of these potential risks.

Many people believe that having a tan is healthy. While it may look nice, there are no health benefits from getting a tan. To debunk another myth, it is also not necessary to get what some call a "base tan" before vacation. Getting this "base tan" does not prevent sunburns.

In fact, exposure to UVA (ultraviolet) light is harmful to the skin and may lead to the development of malignant melanoma, one of the most dangerous types of skin cancer. Recent studies have concluded that UVA exposure in a salon can be up to three times more powerful than the UVA light a person naturally receives from the sun.

UVA light from a tanning salon can also cause additional problems for those that have certain conditions such as a family history of skin cancer, those that burn easily, and those that take medications that cause photosensitive reactions. All of these factors can lead to a higher risk of cancer from using a tanning salon or not using skin protection when outside for long periods of time.

The warnings provided by tanning salons about UVA light exposure are not something to ignore. Those that educate themselves about the risks of this type of exposure can make better decisions about keeping their skin healthy.
