Slowing Down the Skin's Aging Process

Today, though, with the advance of both science and technology, we have many more options at our disposal. Injectable fillers, botox and microdermabrasion are some techniques that have overtaken the popular 80s solution - facelifts. Turn on your television and you look at the stunning faces of Madonna, Cher and even Dolly Parton, all looking so much younger than the average 40 year old. Men aren't lagging behind either! Sir Cliff Richard, the British singer famous for producing hit singles every decade between the 1950s and 2000, also confessed to having submitted himself to botox injections.

While there's no doubt joy among the public at the invention of these miracle remedies to aging and the spectacular results they render, we have to admit that not many of us actually have the money or the desire to spend a fortune in pursuit of a younger looking self. Are there any other ways to tackle this ominous issue, many wonder silently.

Well, the good news is that there certainly are things that each of us can do to decelerate the aging process without burning a hole in our pockets. Read on to find out how:

1. Safeguard your skin from the harmful effects of the sun. As much as you enjoy tanning and sun-bathing, try and keep both those activities to the minimum (or still better, avoid them completely). Use a good sunscreen with a Sun Protection Factor (SPF) of 30 and above on a daily basis. Apply it to all exposed parts at least 20 minutes prior to sun exposure. Also, make sure you re-apply if you sweat a lot, wash yourself with water or go swimming.

2. Keep your skin hydrated both externally and internally. Moisturize your skin on a daily basis taking care to do so after washing. This helps keep dry skin (a sign of aging) at bay. Drinking 8-10 glasses of water a day is also essential to ensure internal hydration.

3. Maintain a healthy diet consuming foods rich in Vitamins A, B, C and E, which help keep your skin looking smooth and youthful looking. Soy based products have also been found to be especially beneficial to the skin as they help maintain collagen and act as antioxidants.

4. Stop smoking. Several studies have shown that tobacco products have a negative impact on the skin, resulting in wrinkles and giving the skin a yellowish cast.

5. Avoid sleeping in the same positions or using the same facial expressions repeatedly. Doing so results in the etching of grooves along the lines formed and these become more and more prominent as we grow older and our skin loses its elasticity.
