How to Naturally Treat and Prevent Eczema

Eczema, also known as atopic dermatitis, is an inflamed skin condition that affects between 10 to 20 percent of the worlds population. Many children that are born with this ailment will find that the disease will clear and disappear with age. Although the cause is unknown, it is believed to be an abnormal response of the immune system. While it can not be cured, the disease is not contagious and can be managed with treatment along with the avoidance of certain triggers that can cause a flare up.

Eczema looks different from person to person. It can be identified by the dry, red, itchy patches of skin and can be accompanied by a clear puss after any infected area is scratched.

The most important routine treatment of Eczema is to avoid scratching any infected areas. Applying lotions to the dry and itchy areas will help to Moisturize the area and bring it back to normal.

The following are some trigger that can lead to the flare up of Eczema and should be avoided.
- Moisturize frequently using lotions
- Avoid an sudden changes in temperature or humidity
- Avoid sweating or overheating
- Reduce your stress levels
- Avoid scratchy materials (e.g., wool or other irritants)
- Avoid harsh soaps, detergents, and solvents
- Avoid environmental factors that trigger allergies (e.g., pollens, molds, mites, and animal dander)
- Monitor diet to identify and avoid any food that lead to outbreaks.

While atopic dermatitis may seem to be a debilitating disease, there are ways that we can treat ourselves, if infected, or work to prevent any future outbreaks.
